I got my first designer handbag when I was 18 years old and I still remember that day like it was yesterday. I was thinking about the Louis Vuitton Speedy for over two years and I still love it just as much seven years later. Two years ago a Louis Vuitton Neverfull joined my little bag family. In todays blog post I want to share my tips for buying your first designer handbag.
Buying a designer handbag definitely means dropping some serious cash. Everyone has something they like to spend their money on and mine has always been handbags. I would rather spend €700 on a bag I know I will love for years and years than buy a new cheap bag every other month. If you are thinking about your first designer purchase check out my tips below.
The type of bag
There are so many different types of bags: tote bags, clutches, cross body bags… Think about which bag you use the most and matches your lifestyle. If you want a bag you can take to work you probably need a big and practical bag. If you want a bag to use for special occasions you most likely want a clutch or a small cross body. You want to invest your money in a bag that you get a lot of use out of.
Some designer bags have insane prices. I’m looking at you Chanel and Hermes. Then again, handbags are a good investment. Most designer brands increase their prices by 5% to 10% every year, and for some brands this number can be even higher. By now I probably could sell my Louis Vuitton Speedy without losing any money. When you are looking for a bag set yourself a budget and examine which bags fit in this range.
I have always been a Louis Vuitton girl. Everybody probably has a designer they are most drawn to and fits your personal style the best. Research brands you love on Google or Pinterest and find one that speaks to you.
If you have ever seen my Instagram feed you know a love a good neutral, so that’s an easy choice for me. On top of that buying a neutral designer bag is the safe choice because it will never go out of style and go with all of your outfits.
The last thing you need to think about is where you are going to buy your bag. Do you want to buy a second hand bag online or do you want to go to a store to have the full shopping experience? I bought both of my Louis Vuitton bags in their store in Antwerp and always loved the luxury experience they give you. But second hand buys can save you a lot of money. Everything has its pros and cons.
